Strange is an understatement – from cute to scary, some creatures look like they came straight out of science fiction movies. The Instagram page @strangest_wildlife has been sharing the weirdest creatures in the wild, from land to sea, and as they describe them: “the rarest, most beautiful, and strangest creatures and plants in the world.”
Here at Tudo do Bem, we have selected some of the most bizarre animals for you to see.
1 – Long-eared Jerboa
The Long-eared Jerboa is a nocturnal rodent resembling a mouse, with a long tail, long hind legs, and exceptionally large ears. In fact, very little is known about this species.
2 – Tenrecs
Tenrecs resemble a cross between a shrew and a hedgehog, with long, pointed snouts and spiky fur.
Striped tenrecs stand out with two main characteristics: a fairly long, black nose and black fur, displaying yellow stripes and bright yellow spine crests on top of their heads, acting as a means of self-defense against predators.
3 – Quokka
The Quokka is considered the happiest animal in the world, and looking at its cute face, it’s easy to see why.
4 – Shoebill
Shoebills are named after their large, hooked bill and enormous frog-like mouth, which they use to capture insects.
5 – Dumbo Octopus
The Dumbo Octopus gets its name from its resemblance to the title character in Disney’s 1941 film. The adorable creature has prominent ear-like fins extending over each eye.
6 – Sarcastic Fringehead
The Sarcastic Fringehead is a small, but fierce fish with a huge mouth and a somewhat aggressive nature.

7 – Harpy Eagle
The Harpy Eagle, also known as the New Guinea Eagle or Papuan Eagle, is the largest and most powerful bird of prey found throughout its range and among the largest species of eagles in the world.
8 – Mantis Shrimp
The Mantis Shrimp is a marine crustacean that can grow up to about 10 centimeters. They boast powerful claws that they use to attack and kill prey. In captivity, some larger species are capable of shattering aquarium glass with a single strike.
9 – Kakapo
The Kakapo is a critically endangered species with only 125 remaining individuals.
It is the world’s only flightless parrot and also the heaviest. It is believed to be one of the longest-living birds in the world.
10 – Okapi
Although the Okapi has striped markings resembling zebras, it is more closely related to giraffes.
It has a long neck, large and flexible ears, and reddish-brown fur that contrasts sharply with horizontal white stripes, rings on its legs, and white ankles.
11 – Peacock Spider
The Peacock Spider, also known as the “bird-dropping spider,” gets its name because it looks and acts like a bird. The male of this tiny species raises its colorful fan-shaped abdomen as a courtship display to attract females.
12 – Troll-Haired Insect
This troll-haired insect is probably one of the most bizarre insects you have ever seen. The unidentified, minuscule creature, measuring only 5 millimeters in length, was found in the Suriname rainforest.
13 – Aye-Aye
The Aye-Aye is a lemur native to Madagascar that combines rodent-like teeth with a specialized thin middle finger that is very useful when searching for food. It is the world’s largest nocturnal primate.
14 – Goliath Tigerfish

The Goliath Tigerfish, also known as the Giant Tigerfish or Mbenga, is a large African freshwater predator from the Alestidae family. This highly predatory fish with large teeth can grow up to 1.5 meters long and weigh 15.5 kilograms.
Several incidents have been reported in the Congo of this fish attacking humans. This seems to be a result of disturbances and shining objects in the water, causing the fish to mistake a human for a large fish.
This reputation, combined with its strength, has given it an almost mythical status among fishermen, being called the “largest freshwater fish in the world.” According to local residents living near the river, the evil spirit “mbenga” would enter the fish and make it attack people. #goliathtigerfish #strangestwildlife
15 – Tardigrades

Tardigrades (also known as water bears or moss piglets) are segmented micro-animals that live in water and have eight legs. Since 1778, more than 1,150 species of tardigrades have been identified.
These animals are capable of surviving in extreme environments. For example, they can withstand temperatures ranging from just above absolute zero to well above the boiling point of water (100 °C), pressures about six times greater than those found in the deepest ocean trenches, ionizing radiation doses hundreds of times higher than the lethal dose for a human, and the vacuum of outer space.
They can go without water or food for more than 10 years, drying up to the point where they have only 3% or less water content, and then rehydrate, feed, and reproduce. #tardigrades
